Rep. Cliff Stearns Honored by Asthma Network

As part of Asthma Awareness Month in May, Florida Representative Cliff Stearns was honored by the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics for his contributions to helping children with asthma. Because of Stearns' 2004 Schoolchildren’s Treatment and Health Management Act, students in all 50 states today are albe to carry their asthma medication with them in school.

Rep. Stearns had this to say about the recognition:

"Twenty million Americans suffer from asthma, and another fifty million have some form of allergies.  The incidence of asthma is increasing at an alarming rate, and is the most common chronic condition among our children, affecting one child in twenty.  Of particular concern is that the highest increase of asthma diagnosis has been among children under the age of five.  As a Member of Congress, I am promoting efforts on asthma awareness, its proper diagnosis, and prevention.

"I am honored to work with the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics and other groups.  I am also proud that due to enactment of my legislation, H.R. 2023, the Asthmatic Schoolchildren’s Treatment and Health Management Act, children in all 50 states have access to the asthma inhalers and epi-pens they need to breath and to live.  In joining the Congressional Asthma and Allergy Caucus, I am working to promote asthma awareness so that families across our nation learn to control asthma rather than have asthma control them.  I commend Chris for speaking out on asthma and showing firsthand how it can be controlled.  Through his Foundation, he is educating people about asthma and promoting an active, healthy lifestyle.  I look forward to working with him on increasing asthma awareness."
